That’s how it feels when you set up a WordPress site with no security. More or less the moment you go live for comments you’ll receive a flood of comments on your pages or posts. The initial elation quickly gives way to despair as you see the rolling tide of crappy comments spams fill your moderation queue.
WordPress understand what a problem this is they even bundle the Askimet Plugin in order to give you some measure of protection out of the box, but you do have to enable and configure it.
My personal favourite is Shield! It does a hell of a lot more than just manage comment spam. Within moments of installing and configuring the comment spam has stopped. Now all I have to do it mark those spams and empty the trash.
